Cruising Patagonia: Stella Australis!

Cruising Patagonia: Stella Australis!

What a way to start the end of our Chilean adventure – with a 4-day cruise along the Patagonia glaciers on the Stella Australis! Our adventure began before we even landed with a spectacular aerial view of all the snow tipped volcanos and bright blue

Asher’s Prize Giving Ceremony!

Asher’s Prize Giving Ceremony!

December 11th, Asher was all dressed up in his “Uniforme Numero Uno” with his new haircut, ready for the Prize Giving ceremony at Mackay. The ceremony started off with an amazing entrance by all the Primary School boys coming in from all directions singing and

Aliya’s “Spirit of Giving” Ceremony!

Aliya’s “Spirit of Giving” Ceremony!

The “Spirit of Giving” ceremony at St. Margarets school was a beautiful and loving end to a spectacular five and half months of fun, friendship, learning, singing, dancing and nurturing support from Aliya’s friends, prefect (Chiche), and teacher (Miss Valentina) in 4B.

The ceremony started with singing and dancing of the primary school girls in a rainbow of colorful outfits with the beautiful St Margarets School in the background.

After the all school presentation, the girls went back to their 4B classroom to have a special prize giving ceremony.

Aliya was given a special friendship prize and a book that the girls had made for her.  We couldn’t have asked for a more amazing teacher than Miss Valentina, who was so nurturing, fun, loving and supportive of Aliya and all the girls in 4B.  Aliya was also extremely lucky to be in a close-knit class of wonderful girls who became her dear friends.

The “Spirit of Giving” Ceremony was on the evening of the very last day of school.  Here is Aliya on our balcony right before going off to her celebration.

She was very excited about her beautiful pony tail that she did for the ceremony.

Definitely Rustico!

Definitely Rustico!

The name of the restaurant says it all: El Rustico! One of Ben’s favorite meals of all times was at a very rustic Chilean BBQ spot on the way to La Campana National Park in Olmue. All of the food was cooked in wood burning

What will you dial in an emergency?   .  .  .  911? Not in Chile! Can you remember 0226800001? How many 0s were there? Can you remember the other numbers? Don’t worry if you can’t remember 0226800001, you can always dial 0226800002!

Lovin’ Los Lagos!

Lovin’ Los Lagos!

Just one week after heading up north to the desert, we flew south to the Region Los Lagos (the Lake District) to hike around the volcanos and tour the Lakes.

Our low point happened when we arrived with 2 starving kids at 7pm at our rustic hotel, La Baita, in the middle of the Conguillio National Park, expecting a nice restaurant and a warm bed and were told that they didn’t think we were coming until the next night and that they didn’t have any food or water.

Fortunately, they were able to throw together a pizza (which was more like ketchup on matzoh with slices of American cheese – probably the worst pizza I had ever eaten) for the kids. And after the kids had gone to bed, and the manager of the hotel had driven an hour to get some fresh meat, Ben and I had a delicious steak & potato dinner with a nice bottle of Chilean red wine.

The next day was a truly magical day of driving and hiking through old lava fields with the snow covered Conguillio volcano to the west and cold sparkling lakes and the tree covered Andes mountains to the east.

The contrast of the white tip of the Conguillio volcano with mounds of black, rocky hardened lava dotted with splashes of yellow flowers was truly picturesque and quite unique:

While driving through the lava fields, we came across an area of strange “bearded” pine trees that were about 5 stories tall!

One of the best parts of staying right in the Conguillio National Park, was that we didn’t encounter any other people on our hikes.  But that made it hard to get a good family photo.  Fortunately, we were able to figure out the self timer on Raquel’s new camera.  Of course, it took us a few times before we got it right!

After a day of hiking, we took a long convoluted drive on the “evacuation route”:

to get to the scenic lake front town of Pucon.  Check out the view from our room at the hill-top Casa Establo Hotel on the outskirts of Pucon:

The next day we set out (with more water and food than we had in the lava fields) for a 6 hour, mostly vertical hike in the Huerquehue National Park:

The highlights of the hike were the stunning views down across the crater lagoon and up toward the snow capped, smoking Volcan Villarica, as well as the well maintained wooden ladder paths:

We are so glad that we took advantage of the 2 beautiful days we had to hike in the National Parks, because our last day was so overcast that we could no longer see Volcan Villarica in the distance.  So, we decided to check out the Mapuche village of Curarrehue, near the Argentina border.

And of course, we had to make it back in time to eat lunch and have some delicious sweets at Cassis, before flying back to Vina del Mar. IMG_2988

Here is one of Raquel’s favorite artsy photos from the Conguillo hike: a part of a tree that had fallen in the woods:

Favoritos de los Lagos!

Favoritos de los Lagos!

As we were eating a delicious torte at Cassis in Pucon after 4 fabulous days in Los Lagos, we asked everyone what were their favorite things about Los Lagos.  And here is what we said: ALIYA (1) Almost lost my tooth (2) The Green Lagoon

Desert Birthday: San Pedro de Atacama!

Desert Birthday: San Pedro de Atacama!

For Raquel’s 40+ Birthday, we took a long weekend trip to the desert of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile for amazing stargazing, breathtaking views of the colors of the desert, salt lake floating, and some arts & crafts. After a 1.5 hour drive from Calama,

Star Gazing!

Star Gazing!

The Atacama Dessert sky is one of the clearest for star gazing! It’s dry conditions (it usually gets less than a millimeter of rain/year), high altitude (8,000 feet), and low level of light pollution (there is pretty much nothing else there besides San Pedro) make the Atacama dessert a perfect place for seeing planets, the moon, and the stars of the Southern Hemisphere.

We went on an amazing star gazing tour, where we looked through high powered telescopes

and learned about constellations, star clusters, and the moon.  This was a photo that I took of the moon through a telescope.  It is so clear that you can see the moon’s craters!

Ketchup on Pizza?!?!

Ketchup on Pizza?!?!

We were at the Family Day (“Kermesse”) for Asher’s school (Mackay) and when we were ordering some pizza, Asher said to make sure we asked for it “sin ketchup” (without ketchup)! So it turns out that most kids put not just a little but a
